Donating a car

What Happens to a Donated Car?

A car donated to Cars 2nd Chance

Have you ever wondered what actually happens to a car once you hand it over? The honest answer is that the work passes from one shoulder to another until everything is where it should be — and most of that work is ours, not yours.

How the process works

  1. You fill out the form

It starts with the donation form on this site. We collect your contact details and the basics about the vehicle — year, make, model, condition, and whether it runs.

  2. We send your paperwork

You get a thank-you letter by email that explains how to get the car to us, along with the donor form you will want later for your taxes.

  3. You return the signed documents

Send back the completed donor form and the signed title. We then send you a Release of Liability so ownership transfers cleanly out of your name.

  4. We arrange the tow

We line up a tow company and they call you directly to set a date and time. All you have to do is be there when they arrive.

  5. The car goes to work

We sell the vehicle, send you IRS Form 1098-C after the sale, and send the proceeds on to the nonprofit partner you chose.

That is the whole thing. Most donors are surprised at how little is asked of them beyond signing a title and answering the phone.

A second look at the garage might be all it takes. If you have a vehicle sitting unused, start the donation form or call us at (925) 326-5868.
